HOW GOVERNMENT EXAMS CALCULATE AGE AS ON CUTOFF DATE

What is the "Age as on" Cutoff Date Rule in Sarkari Exams?

In government recruitment examinations conducted by Staff Selection Commission (SSC), Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS), and Railway Recruitment Boards (RRB), candidate age is not evaluated on the day they submit their application. Instead, all portals calculate age strictly as on an official Crucial Date / Cutoff Date specified in the recruitment notification.

Standard Rules for SSC & UPSC Cutoff Dates:

  • Notification issued in the First Half of the Year (Jan 1 to Jul 31): Age cutoff is generally fixed as 1st January of that exam year.
  • Notification issued in the Second Half of the Year (Aug 1 to Dec 31): Age cutoff is fixed as 1st August of that exam year (e.g., SSC CGL, CHSL).
  • UPSC Civil Services Exam (CSE): The crucial cutoff date is uniformly 1st August of the examination year.
  • Banking Exams (IBPS PO, Clerk, SBI): Cutoff date is usually the 1st day of the month in which the notification is published.

Government of India (DoPT) Age Relaxation Rules:

Under Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) guidelines, upper age limit relaxations are provided to candidates belonging to reserved categories across all Central and State government vacancies:

Category Code Reserved Category Upper Age Relaxation
UR / EWS General / Economically Weaker Section No Relaxation (0 Yrs)
OBC Other Backward Classes (Non-Creamy Layer) +3 Years
SC / ST Scheduled Castes / Scheduled Tribes +5 Years
PwBD (UR) Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (General) +10 Years
PwBD (OBC) Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (OBC) +13 Years
PwBD (SC/ST) Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (SC/ST) +15 Years
ESM Ex-Servicemen (Military Personnel) 3 Yrs after service deduction
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQS)

Staff Selection Commission (SSC) calculates your completed years, months, and days between your exact Date of Birth and 1st August of the notification year. If the notification specifies an age limit of 18 to 27 years, a candidate must have been born not earlier than 02-08-1998 and not later than 01-08-2007 (subject to category relaxation).

For General category candidates, the age limit is 21 to 32 years as on 1st August. For OBC candidates, the maximum limit is 35 years (32 + 3 years relaxation), and for SC/ST candidates, it is 37 years (32 + 5 years relaxation). PwBD candidates can appear up to 42 years of age.

If the maximum age limit for the post is 27 years without any category relaxation, having an age of 27 years and 1 day means you have crossed the upper age threshold and will be marked Overaged (Not Eligible) by the automated application portal.

Our calculation algorithm accurately evaluates the exact number of days in every calendar month (28, 29, 30, or 31 days) including February 29 during leap years (such as 2000, 2004, 2020, 2024, 2028), ensuring 100% mathematical precision identical to government recruitment validation engines.

Simply enter your Date of Birth, select your reservation category, and click "Calculate Age & Eligibility". The tool will instantly cross-reference your calculated age against 20+ major exams (SSC, UPSC, Banking, Railway, Defence) and display your real-time eligibility badge and remaining margin.

Pro Tip for Candidates

Always use your 10th Class (Matriculation) Certificate date of birth for calculating age in government exam forms. A single day difference between your 10th marksheet and Aadhaar card can lead to candidature rejection during Document Verification (DV).
