LUMP SUM CALCULATOR

Market-linked me 2% kam kiya jayega

LUMP SUM YA SIP — KYA BETTER HAI

Seedhi baat: maths me lump sum jeetta hai

Agar aapke paas aaj hi paisa pada hai, to lump sum se behtar koi option nahi — kyunki wo paise abhi se compound hone lagte hain. SIP me har instalment sirf us din se compound hoti hai jab aap usse daalte hain, to uska average horizon lagbhag aadha reh jaata hai. Do saal ka SIP aaj hi lump sum me daal dein, to compounding aage badh jaata hai.

Lekin zindagi me SIP jeetta hai

Yeh sirf maths nahi, aadat ki baat hai. Wo ₹5,00,000 jo aapke savings account me padi hai us par 3.5% interest mil raha hai — inflation se kam. Lekin wo paisa aapke paas hai hi nahi roz ki zaroorat me bhi kharch hota rahega. SIP me har mahina wahi kuch paisa nikalta hai jo aapne dekh kar "next mahina" karne ka faisla kar liya tha.

Isliye sabse practical approach — hybrid — jo zyada log use karte hain: jo surplus paisa aapke paas abhi hai aur use kahin nahi lag raha, use aaj hi lump sum me daaliye; aur har mahine jo income aati hai uska ek hissa SIP me daaliye. Compound ka fayda bhi mil gaya, aur discipline bhi.

Is calculator me market-linked return par ek volatility haircut lagaya gaya hai. Agar equity fund ka long-term average 12% hai, to wo 12% har saal nahi deta — aur jo saal aapko paisa chahiye, wahi achha saal hone ki koi guarantee nahi. Isliye calculation 2% kam karke dikhata hai.

Tax ke liye switch karun?

Equity fund aur ELSS dono me long term capital gains ek hi rate (12%) lete hain — lump sum se bhi, SIP se bhi. Isliye tax ke liye switch karne ka koi fayda nahi. Debt funds ka matlab alag hai: indexation ab nahi milta aur naye regime me gains slab rate par lagte hain, to debt lump sum se SIP me switch karna tax bachata nahi, sirf deferred karta hai.

Inflation ka hisaab

Ye calculator nominal value dikhata hai — yaani aapko jo sach me milega. Uski real value inflation hataane ke baad kam hogi. Asli purchasing power dekhna ho to return rate me approximately inflation jitna add kar dijiye — yahi standard shortcut hai.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Lump sum wins when you already have the money sitting idle, because money invested earlier compounds for longer. If you invest a lump sum of two years of SIP today, those two years of extra compounding can add noticeably more. SIP wins on behaviour, not maths: the same amount spread over a year usually beats lump sum for most people purely because they actually keep investing. The right answer is usually to invest whatever you already have now as a lump sum and route your monthly savings into SIP.

For a guaranteed product such as an FD or NPS-Tr, use the actual guaranteed rate, because it is a promise. For equity mutual funds or market-linked products, the commonly used long-term average of twelve to fourteen percent is the optimistic end, and equity funds do not move in a straight line. This calculator applies a separate volatility haircut to market-linked returns so the projection reflects a realistic expectation rather than the best year.

With SIP each instalment only starts compounding from the date you pay it, so the average instalment has roughly half the horizon of a single upfront payment. That is the entire reason a lump sum usually beats an equal-amount SIP mathematically. The gap narrows the longer you keep the SIP running, because the later instalments keep compounding after the lump sum has already been fully invested.

Interest once a year added to the principal, so the next year earns on the larger balance. This is how FD, PPF and NPS-Tr work. Compounding monthly or quarterly would add a little more, but this calculator uses annual compounding deliberately to stay consistent with how Indian deposit products actually credit interest, so the numbers stay comparable with your bank statement.

Consider it, but run the numbers rather than assuming. Equity mutual funds and ELSS have the same one percent long term capital gains rate whether you buy once or through SIP, so tax does not favour either. Debt funds however lose the indexation benefit under the old regime, and in the new regime gains are taxed at slab rate, so switching from a lump sum debt investment to SIP mainly defers the tax rather than saving it.

The calculator treats a market-linked return as an expected average and then deducts a volatility factor to reach the figure it actually uses. The idea is simple: if a fund averages twelve percent, it will not give you twelve percent every year, and the year you need the money is not guaranteed to be a good one. Reduce the return field yourself to see how sensitive the result is, because that sensitivity is the real message of this calculation.

A widely used rule is to put any genuinely surplus money you already hold into a lump sum, because it is earning nothing while it sits in your savings account, and to route every future monthly saving into SIP. This is usually called the hybrid approach and it gets you the compounding benefit of early money without depending on your willpower for the whole amount.

No, and you should be careful reading the final figure. It shows nominal future value, which is what you will actually receive. In real terms the amount is smaller after inflation, so treat the output as the upper bound on what that money can buy later. If you want a real-terms figure, raise the return rate by roughly the inflation rate, which is the usual approximation.

There is no universal minimum, because it depends on the product. A lump sum into a mutual fund can be as low as five hundred rupees. Bank FDs often start around five hundred to one thousand. SIPs usually start at five hundred rupees a month on most platforms, and some insurers and brokers accept as little as two hundred fifty. Check the specific product for its current limit rather than assuming from this calculator.
