Quick goals:

MONTHLY INCOME KAISE BANAYEIN

Ek hi formula, sab schemes me

Monthly income ki zaroorat wale product me aapki corpus se har saal ek fixed percentage nikal kar har mahina bataya jaata hai. Isliye corpus = saal ka income ÷ return ka rate. ₹6,00,000 saal ka income aur 7% return par corpus ₹85.7 lakh banta hai. Return badhta hai to corpus kam chahiye — yahi ek formula government MIS se private pension tak sab par lagta hai.

Corpus, principal aur dividend — fark samjho

  • Corpus — wo paise ki kulfi jisse income banti hai. Jitni badi kulfi, jitni badi monthly income.
  • Principal — kulfi ka woh hissa jo wapas aapka hai. Income products me yehi bacha hona chahiye.
  • Dividend plan — fund se nikal kar dividend deta hai, jisse capital kam hota jata hai. Yehi sabse common galti hai: dividend lene ke baad kulfi chhoti ho jaati hai, aur 15-20 saal baad income bhi gir jaati hai.
  • Growth / reinvestment — jo return mila use wapas daal diya gaya. Yahi compounding banata hai.

Tax ka hisaab zaroor karein

Government schemes (Post Office MIS, SCSS) par interest aapki total income me jud jaata hai aur slab rate par tax lagta hai. New regime me koi basic exemption limit nahi hai. Private pension aur annuity products me tax deferral milti hai, lekin 60% (kuch me 50%) annuity kharidne par bhi tax lagta hai. Isliye same corpus par 5% wale aur 30% wale taxpayer ki after-tax monthly income bahut alag hoti hai.

Inflation sabse bada dushman hai

Ek ₹50,000 fixed monthly income 30 saal baad aadhi se zyada kam kharid paayega, kyunki prices lagbhag 14 saal me double ho jaate hain. Isliye sirf fixed annuity me saara paisa rakhna galat hai — kuch hissa market-linked ya index-linked rakhna chahiye taaki income apne aap upar uthe. Retirement me sabse badi galti yahi hoti hai: income banate-banate poora capital income products me daal diya, aur growth ke liye kuch bacha hi nahi.

Safety ka structure

Corpus ko ek hi jagah mat rakhiye. Ek practical split: 2-3 saal ki kharch ka hissa safe liquid instrument me (jisse bura market saal aaye to bechne ki zaroorat na pade), income wala hissa monthly-pay karne wale product me, aur baaki growth ke liye market assets me. Yehi split pension planning advisors bhi recommend karte hain.

POPULAR MONTHLY INCOME SCHEMES

SchemeCostReturn typeKya milta hai
PMJJBY ₹436 / saal Term insurance ₹2,00,000 life cover
18–50 saal, renewal se aage nahi hota. Death ke case me nominee ko term cover, EMI ke baad family monthly income.
PMSBY ₹20 / saal Accident insurance ₹2,00,000 accidental death / ₹1,00,000 total disability
18–70 saal. Medical se hua death ya normal disease isme cover nahi hota — sirf accident.
NPS-Tr ₹2,500 minimum Govt securities portfolio Government ne guarantee rate diya hua
Roz online invest kar sakte ho, saal me kam se kam ek baar. Rate PFRDA periodically reset karta hai.
Post Office MIS ₹1,500 (5 yr) se ₹1 lakh (max) 7.5%, quarterly 5 saal, double se aage nahi
Quarterly interest milta hai aur composite nahi hota. 10 saal baad interest simple rehta hai.
SCSS ₹1,000 se ₹30 lakh (max) 7–8%, quarterly 5 saal, 40 saal tak extend
Sirf 60 saal ya usse upar wale. Interest quarterly, quarter ke end me, compound nahi hota.
Lakhpati Dhan ₹250–₹2,000 / saal Target based saving Nishchit ₹10,000/₹1,00,000/₹1,00,000 mahina
Chhota investment, target hit hone par nishchit monthly income. Private insurer ke products me.
Fixed annuity ( insurer ) Ek dafa Guaranteed 4–7% Umra bharna annuity
Kuch insurers pension ke liye guaranteed annuity dete hain. Retire hone par invest karte ho, uske baad income.

PMJJBY aur PMSBY term insurance hain — ye monthly income nahi dete, sirf unexpected death par family ko cover dete hain. Unka monthly income lena common confusion hai.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

It depends entirely on the return, because this is an annuity not a fixed deposit. At 7% a year you would need roughly ₹85.7 lakh. At 8% about ₹75 lakh. At 10% it drops to ₹60 lakh. The rule is simple: annual income divided by the rate, so 6,00,000 divided by 0.07 gives about ₹85.7 lakh. Use the rate field above to see the number move as the rate changes.

A dividend plan takes a slice of the fund assets and pays it out periodically, so your capital keeps shrinking over time. An income plan keeps the capital intact and pays out what it earns, which is what actually builds wealth and keeps you inflation protected. For anyone building a retirement income stream, reinvested dividends beat a payout that quietly eats your capital.

Government MIS schemes such as Post Office MIS and SCSS are safe and predictable but their rates are set by the government and have been trending down, while the tax treatment is worse because interest is added to your income at slab rates. Private MIS and pension products can give a higher headline rate and better tax deferral, but the units are not government guaranteed. There is no single right answer, it depends on whether you value certainty or growth.

Because the answer genuinely depends on your situation, and getting it wrong would mislead you. In the old regime government interest used to be exempt up to the basic exemption limit, and in the new regime everything is taxed at your slab. The same corpus therefore produces completely different after-tax income for a 5% taxpayer and a 30% taxpayer. This calculator shows the pre-tax figure and tells you to adjust it, rather than pretending it knows your tax status.

Faster than most people expect. A ₹50,000 income that is fixed for 30 years loses more than half its purchasing power at 5% inflation, because prices roughly double in fourteen years. That is the strongest argument for a portion of your retirement income sitting in market-linked or index-linked assets, rather than keeping everything in a fixed annuity that never grows.

NPS-Tr gives a government announced guaranteed rate on a government securities portfolio, with no market risk and no insurer involved, which is a genuine advantage for safety. Private annuity options from insurers can offer a variable or higher guaranteed rate but they are insurer promises rather than government ones. Many people split, taking most of the income from the guaranteed source and a smaller part from a market-linked one for growth.

Split the corpus by purpose rather than by product hype. Keep enough to cover a few years of expenses in a safe liquid instrument so a bad market year never forces you to sell, hold the income-generating portion in products that genuinely pay monthly, and keep a growth portion in market assets for the long term. The most common retirement mistake is putting the entire corpus into an income product and then having no growth left.

Longer than most people assume, because income needs are lifelong while most products have a fixed term. A plan that pays monthly for only ten years leaves you with nothing at seventy. Extending is possible with many products, but check the extension terms and rate before committing, because the rate at extension is often lower than the rate you were originally offered.
