IN-HAND SALARY CALCULATOR โ CTC โ TAKE-HOME | NEW vs OLD REGIME (FY 2025-26)
Why your offer letter number is not your salary
When an Indian employer quotes a CTC of โน12 lakh, almost nobody takes home โน1 lakh a month. CTC โ Cost to Company โ is the total annual expense the company incurs for employing you: your salary components, the employer's statutory contributions on your behalf, gratuity provisions, insurance premiums, and often variable pay that pays out only on performance. The money that actually lands in your bank account every month โ the in-hand or net salary โ is typically 75-85% of CTCรท12, and the exact share depends on how your CTC is structured. Understanding this waterfall before accepting an offer, negotiating a hike, or comparing two offers is a genuinely valuable financial skill, and this calculator exists to give you that picture in seconds with every line item shown.
The CTC to in-hand waterfall, step by step
Step 1 โ Split the CTC. Variable pay or performance bonus (commonly 5-15% of CTC) is set aside โ it pays out quarterly or annually. What remains is fixed pay. Step 2 โ Build the gross. Basic salary is set as a percentage of gross fixed pay (this tool defaults to 45%, following the common structure where basic plus dearness allowance is about half of remuneration); HRA is typically 40-50% of basic; the balance becomes special allowance. Step 3 โ Remove employer-side items that never reach you: employer PF at 12% of basic, and gratuity provision at 4.81% of basic (the statutory formula under the Payment of Gratuity Act). Step 4 โ Remove employee-side statutory deductions: your own 12% PF contribution, professional tax of about โน200 a month in most states. Step 5 โ Apply income tax as monthly TDS. Whatever survives all five steps is your monthly in-hand.
New regime vs old regime โ the FY 2025-26 reality
Budget 2025 reshaped the new regime decisively. Slabs softened (4-8 lakh at 5%, 8-12 at 10%, 12-16 at 15%, 16-20 at 20%, 20-24 at 25%, beyond that 30%), the standard deduction for salaried employees rose to โน75,000, and the Section 87A rebate now zeroes out tax entirely up to โน12 lakh taxable income โ effectively โน12.75 lakh of salary income. The old regime remains available: slabs of 0-2.5 nil, 2.5-5 at 5%, 5-10 at 20%, beyond 10 lakh at 30%, โน50,000 standard deduction, and the full deduction menu โ 80C up to โน1.5 lakh, 80D health insurance, HRA exemption, home-loan interest under 24(b) up to โน2 lakh, 80G donations.
Who wins? Run the numbers: without deductions worth roughly โน3.75-4.5 lakh a year, the old regime almost never beats the new one for salaried incomes between โน8 and โน25 lakh. The old regime still makes sense for taxpayers with a hefty home-loan interest claim, high rent in a metro with a low basic, large 80C plus 80D commitments, or specific income mixes. This tool computes both regimes simultaneously from your inputs โ including your real HRA exemption from rent paid โ and marks the winner with the exact rupee difference, so you never have to trust rule-of-thumb advice again.
The basic salary lever โ why structure matters
Basic is not just a line item; it drives PF on both sides (24% of basic combined), gratuity, and the HRA ceiling. A higher basic (50%+) means more retirement corpus and a larger HRA exemption under the old regime, but lower monthly in-hand because PF eats more cash. A lower basic (40%) maximises today's take-home but quietly shrinks your retirement savings and any future gratuity. When comparing two offers with identical CTC, the one with the lower basic pays more cash now; the one with the higher basic builds more future security. Neither is wrong โ but you should choose knowingly, which is why this tool exposes the basic-percentage control directly.
HRA exemption โ the old regime's biggest swing factor
The HRA exemption is the least of three numbers: actual HRA received; rent paid minus 10% of basic; and 50% of basic for metro cities (Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai) or 40% for everywhere else. If you pay no rent, the exemption is zero and the whole HRA is taxable in the old regime โ one more reason the new regime usually wins for people living with family or in owned homes. If your rent is high relative to basic, the exemption grows and the old regime becomes competitive. This calculator takes your actual monthly rent and computes the true exemption โ not an assumption.
Reading your payslip like a pro
Once you can decode the waterfall, a payslip holds no mysteries. Gross earnings this month minus PF (employee share), professional tax, and TDS (income tax) equals net pay. If your slip shows "employer PF" as an earning line, remember it is immediately deducted back โ it goes to your EPF account, not your bank. Annual components like gratuity and variable pay appearing "monthly" in CTC breakups are provisions, not payments. And when your variable pay does land, it is taxed at your slab rate as salary income โ plan advance tax if it is large. Compare this decoded figure with what this calculator predicts; if they differ materially, your company's structure has custom components, and the offer letter's annexure will name them.
Practical scenarios where this calculator pays off
Offer comparison: a โน14 LPA CTC with 60% variable often pays less monthly cash than a โน12.5 LPA with 5% variable โ model both before choosing. Hike negotiation: know exactly how much a โน2 lakh CTC bump adds to your monthly account after tax, so you negotiate on real money, not headline numbers. Regime switch: every April your employer asks for a regime declaration โ run your expected full-year numbers here first. Rent decisions: moving from โน15,000 to โน30,000 rent changes your old-regime HRA exemption materially; test it here before signing a lease. And once your salary lands, the linked EMI and PPF calculators help you plan what to do with it.
Accuracy, assumptions and privacy
This calculator implements the standard Indian salaried structure: basic as a chosen percentage of gross fixed pay, HRA at 40-50% of basic, employer and employee PF at 12% of basic, gratuity at 4.81%, professional tax at โน200 per month (most states; a few differ), and FY 2025-26 slabs with the 87A rebate and 4% cess in both regimes. Surcharge is not applied (it engages above โน50 lakh incomes); employer NPS (80CCD(2)) and other niche components are not modelled. Companies with custom structures โ car allowances, meal cards, LTA โ will differ. All computation happens in your browser; no salary figure is ever sent anywhere. Treat results as high-accuracy estimates for planning, and your payroll team's computation as the final word on your actual payslip.
