How to Calculate GST (Formulas & Rules)

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a single, destination-based indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services in India. Whether you are a business owner calculating tax on a product invoice or a customer wanting to extract the base price from an MRP tag, this online GST Calculator computes exact numbers instantly.

1. Formula to Add GST (Exclusive Amount):

When you have a base price and need to add GST to find the final billing amount:

GST Amount = (Base Price × GST Rate %) / 100
Net Payable Amount = Base Price + GST Amount

Example: For a base amount of ₹10,000 at 18% GST → GST = (10000 × 18) / 100 = ₹1,800. Total = ₹10,000 + ₹1,800 = ₹11,800.

2. Formula to Remove / Extract GST (Inclusive / MRP Amount):

When you have a total price (like MRP or billed amount) and need to find the original pre-tax value and the GST included:

GST Amount = Total Amount - [Total Amount × {100 / (100 + GST Rate %)}]
Base / Net Price = Total Amount / (1 + (GST Rate % / 100))

Example: For an MRP of ₹11,800 with 18% GST → Base Price = 11,800 / 1.18 = ₹10,000. GST Amount = 11,800 - 10,000 = ₹1,800.

3. Understanding GST Tax Components in India:

  • CGST (Central Goods and Services Tax): Collected by the Central Government on intra-state supplies (50% of the total GST rate).
  • SGST (State Goods and Services Tax): Collected by the State Government on intra-state supplies (50% of the total GST rate).
  • IGST (Integrated Goods and Services Tax): Collected by the Central Government on inter-state sales, imports, and exports (100% of the rate).
  • UTGST (Union Territory GST): Levied in place of SGST in Union Territories without legislatures (e.g. Andaman & Nicobar, Chandigarh, Ladakh).

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS - GST CALCULATION

GST Exclusive: The initial price does NOT include tax. GST is added on top of the base price (e.g., ₹1000 base + 18% GST = ₹1180).
GST Inclusive: The product price already includes the tax amount within its MRP tag. You calculate backwards to extract the net cost and tax share (e.g., ₹1180 MRP = ₹1000 base + ₹180 GST).

When both the buyer and seller reside in the same state (Intra-State transaction), the total GST rate is divided equally between CGST (Central) and SGST (State). For example, an 18% tax rate is charged as 9% CGST and 9% SGST.

Yes, pure gold and silver attract a special 3% GST rate (1.5% CGST + 1.5% SGST). In addition, jewellery making charges attract a 5% GST rate.

Under GST regulations, trade discounts must be deducted from the gross price before applying the GST percentage. For example, if a ₹1,000 product has a ₹200 discount, 18% GST will be calculated on the discounted value of ₹800 (Tax = ₹144, Total = ₹944).
