SUKANYA SAMRIDDHI KE SAARE RULES — POORA GUIDE

Deposit sirf 15 saal, maturity 21 saal

Yeh sabse zyada galat samajha jane wala rule hai. Account open hone ke baad pehle 15 saal tak hi deposit kar sakte ho. Uske baad account band nahi hota — bas naya paisa nahi daala ja sata. Account 21 saal me mature hota hai aur tab interest bhi ruk jaata hai.

Isi wajah se jo calculator 21 saal tak deposit maan leta hai wo jyada dikhata hai. Real figure kam aati hai. ₹10,000 har mahine wala plan sahi model me 21 saal baad ₹57.45 lakh deta hai, jabki galat model ₹67 lakh se aage dikha deta hai — lagbhag ₹9.57 lakh ka fark, sirf ek galti ki wajah se.

Interest har saal, har mahine nahi

Savings account ki tarah quarter me interest nahi aata. Scheme har financial year ke ant me, yaani 31 March ko, ek baar poora interest running balance par lagata hai. Isi liye yahan 8.2% ko saal me ek baar apply kiya gaya hai, chaar quarters me tod kar nahi.

Deposit kitna aur kab tak

  • Har saal kam se kam ₹250, zyada se zyada ₹1,50,000.
  • Ye limit poore saal ki hai — saal bhar 10 baar ₹15,000 de kar aap ₹1.5 lakh cross nahi kar sakte.
  • Baad me deposit ₹50 ya ₹100 ke multiples me ho sakta hai (post office par ₹50, bank par ₹100).
  • Account 15 saal baad deposit lena band kar deta hai.

₹250 nahi dala to kya hoga

Us saal ka account default ho jaata hai aur ₹50 penalty lagti hai. Aap kabhi bhi baad me ₹50 penalty + us saal ka ₹250 deposit dekar account wapas normal kar sakte ho, aur uske baad se poora interest wapas milne lagta hai. Calculator me har saal ke liye ye penalty khud-ba-khud lagti hai.

21 saal se pehle paisa nikalna

Do tarah se nikal sakta hai, aur dono me conditions hain:

  • Partial withdrawal (padhai ke liye): jab ladki 18 saal ki ho ya 10th class me ho. Max 50% — lekin pichle saal ke ant ki balance ka, abhi ki balance ka nahi. Saal me ek baar, aur ya to ek saath ya max 5 saal ki installments me. Saath me institute ka admission offer ya fees ka demand lagana padta hai.
  • Premature closure (shaadi par): jab ladki 18 se upar ho aur shaadi ho, to shaadi se ek mahina pehle se teen mahine baad tak apply kar sakte ho.

In dono ke alawa account turant band nahi hota — sirf guardian ke death jaise compassionate cases me exception milta hai, aur tab interest post office savings rate par milta hai, Sukanya rate par nahi.

Tax: poora tax-free

Sukanya Samriddhi India ke teen fully tax-free savings schemes me se ek hai. Deposit Section 80CCC me deduction deta hai (₹1,50,000 ki limit PPF aur ELSS ke saath shared hai), har saal jo interest banta hai wo tax-free hai, aur 21 saal baad poori amount par koi tax nahi lagta. Bas ek shart — poore 21 saal account chala jaye, warna interest aur maturity dono taxable ho jaate hain.

Apne liye sahi plan kaise banayein

  1. Pehle decide karein ki 15 saal me aap saal kitna de sakte ho — yahi aapki real ceiling hai, chahe aap afford kar sake.
  2. Jaldi saal me deposit karein. Interest saal ke ant me lagta hai, isliye December ki deposit March tak poore saal interest leti hai, June ki sirf aadha.
  3. Har saal ₹250 zaroor rakhein, warna ₹50 penalty lagegi aur woh saal ka poora interest chala jaayega.
  4. 16th saal se aapka kaam sirf wait karna hai — deposit band, interest chalta rahega.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

The government notifies the rate every quarter and has held it at 8.2% per annum for the last several quarters, including the period from 1 April 2026 to 31 December 2026. Because the rate is government-set and not market-driven, it can move in either direction at each quarterly review, and this calculator lets you change the rate to see the impact of that.

Because most of them model deposits for all 21 years, which the scheme does not allow. You can deposit only during the first 15 years from the date the account was opened. After year 15 the account keeps earning interest but accepts no fresh deposits. At 8.2%, a plan of Rs 1,20,000 a year for 15 years correctly grows to about Rs 57.46 lakh, while a calculator that wrongly accepts deposits for 21 years will tell you roughly Rs 67 lakh.

At least Rs 250 in every financial year, and at most Rs 1,50,000. After the initial deposit you can add money in multiples of Rs 50 at a post office or in multiples of Rs 100 at most banks, in as many instalments as you like through the year. The annual ceiling counts across all instalments, not per transaction.

The account is marked as in default for that year and a Rs 50 penalty is charged. You can regularise it at any time by paying the Rs 50 penalty plus the minimum deposit for that year, and from then on the account earns the normal rate again. The calculator adds the penalty automatically whenever a year falls below the minimum.

A partial withdrawal is allowed once the girl turns 18 or is in class 10 or earlier, and only for higher education. The maximum is 50% of the balance at the close of the previous financial year, not 50% of the current balance, and it can be taken once a year either as a lump sum or in up to five annual instalments. You also need an admission offer or fee demand from the institution.

Yes, it is one of the three fully tax-free Indian savings schemes. Deposits qualify for a deduction under Section 80CCC with the Rs 1,50,000 ceiling shared with PPF and ELSS, the interest earned each year is exempt, and the entire amount at maturity is tax-free. To keep that status you must hold the account for the full 21 years, and the deducted amount cannot be re-used for any other deduction.

Yes. The scheme allows premature closure for the intended marriage of the account holder, provided she is at least 18, and the application has to be made between one month before and three months after the marriage date. Beyond that, closure is only permitted in genuinely compassionate cases such as the death of the guardian, and then interest is paid at the prevailing post office savings rate rather than the Sukanya rate.

Twenty-one years from the date the account was opened, not from the first deposit. Interest stops accruing once 21 years are complete, so it is worth checking the opening date rather than assuming you have the full 21 years of compounding available.

Yearly. Unlike a savings account that pays interest quarterly, the scheme credits interest once at the end of each financial year on the running balance. That is why this calculator applies 8.2% exactly once per year rather than dividing it into four quarters, and using a quarterly formula would overstate the balance slightly.

The rate is guaranteed but government-set rather than contracted, so it can be revised at each quarterly review, while an FD rate is locked for its tenure. The deposit ceiling is much lower at Rs 1.5 lakh a year, but the tax treatment is better since Sukanya is fully tax-free and qualifying deposits also count for 80CCC. Deposits are also limited to 15 years, after which an FD can be renewed for as long as you want.
