Paste text. The whole point is to simulate what the ATS "sees" after it parses your file — and that is plain text. If your PDF copies out as garbled or reordered text, that itself is a red flag: many ATS parsers will struggle with it too. 180 to 1000 words scores full marks here. In practice: freshers should aim for one page (350-500 words), experienced professionals one to two pages (500-900 words). Very short resumes lack scope and outcomes; very long ones dilute your strongest bullets and often indicate older, duties-only writing. Bullet points help both the parser and the human skimmer.

Two common reasons. First, formatting: if you pasted from a designed PDF, headers or tables may have scrambled the text so section headings are not detected — check that words like "Experience" and "Skills" survived the copy-paste. Second, the writing style: strong resumes are written as verb + what + measurable result. If you wrote duties ("responsible for managing...") instead of achievements ("grew traffic 240% in 9 months"), the verbs and metrics checks will punish it — fairly, because recruiters do too.
